1st yr high (99-2000) was a blast! under the supervision of our coach ompong merida, it was the first time the age-group born 84-85 became champions! since grade school zilch yan! (when i talked about grade school soccer previously, i was referring to Our age-group--85-86). we won the coke-go-for goal under-16 in ncr and luzon! hah! i also grabbed mvp honors (co-mvp with mickey ingles in the ncr finals) in both! astig! sobrang morale boost for the team, and for me! heheh.. =)

anyway we won all the way to the national finals in dumaguete, but we lost there..5th out of 6 i think. oh well.. a team of record-breakers hehe, 1st-time championships and also the 1st ncr team not to qualify in the final four of that u16 tournament. oh well. =)

that year's intrams was a really great experience for our class. i remember our section beating the top bets for that year: sections B and N. despite criticism and trash talk, B lost a frustrating 1-2 defeat against our class (go A!). it was paolo abarcar and carlo alojado that scored those goals.

in the finals, we met with N, with their towering best goalkeeper, martin quimson. it was a really tough fight, especially since we had no paolo abarcar, who has been resting since the week before due to sore eyes. the first half went by scoreless, with a lot of attemps on both sides of the field.

in the 2nd half, they broke the stalemate. it was a teammate who handed the ball in the penalty area, and they scored from the spot. the class almost lost hope, but with much fight we managed to score one in! hah! i remember that instead of stopping when it was sure that they've got the ball, i gave in the extra effort to raise my foot to block, and to close up their space... much just giving the extra effort.

the opportunity came, and i found myself stealing the ball from quimson, playing defender, and bringing the ball upfield to the baseline. once there, 3 N ppl were at me, so i just layed the ball off to the open tan-tan doroin, who equalised a superb finish! ang galing! wala na, they were pressured and all, and so the inevitable 2nd goal came around. it was in the form of my penalty kick, due to a hand-ball inside the area. we won from behind!! =)

in the summer of that year a tryouts was held in the psc stadium (ultra) for the national team. i dared to join and sacrificed my whole summer in doing so. heheh, we spent our summer days there in the psc dormitory, and we practiced twice everyday (am and then pm), except sundays when which we are given the day off.

it was a gruesome, tiring but fun experience.. to have a routinely schedule of eat-sleep-play with the occasional hand-wash of clothes during rest periods. (natuto akong maglaba! hehehhe) well, the tryout lasted the whole summer until june... and i was required to miss a month's worth of school for it. auspiciously, it all paid off and i was selected! first 11 pa! hahah!

the tournament was the u-16 asian cup which is held in japan. we flew there with exciting hearts... but we stood with broken ones. our first game was against japan, and right then and there in the first half, we lost already. final score: 0-16! X( we tried to make up for this shattering defeat but to no avail...0-8 to indonesia and 1-9 to singapore. oh fudge.

capten
i was captain for a game! (vs indonesia) =]

what the hey, we had fun anyway.. yeap. free equipment and allowance and travel and food and all! all we had to do was play our best! hehe, easier said than done e no.. however i think the real fault lied in our inexperience. it was the first time that we played in a real good field in a crowd-filled stadium with a much advanced level of football. shucks. hehe oh well =)
