the following year, i came back with much more ardor to play. 2nd yr high
(00-2001) was the time when it's my turn to really play, and also to
lead. during practices, we sometimes get to play with the then candidates
team (3rd yr-4th yr ppl) and occasionally, we won in such practice matches.
one of my first best goals in a match happened during this time:
they were pounding us in our own half, and we couldn't get past their defense.
then, in one instant, we found them flat-footed, and so we took the opportunity
to for an attack. a short goal-kick was made to my defender in the left flank, who
then passed the ball upfield to the winger gerard cancio. having 2 people on
him, i went up and offered support from the center, and i was given the pass.
he then ran up and gave support right above me, setting up a chance for a
combination play. seeing what he did, i initiated the wall-pass, giving the ball
to him then going for the reception of it one-touch. he made a wonderful pass,
and i was on the run! still outside the goalie's box, the keeper approached for
a tackle, but i flicked the ball to the side just in time. gOal!@ (god, i wish i had
footage of that game) =]
anywho, the age-group was our own 85-86, and once again, we placed 1st in
the yearly alaska cup festival in alabang, because of the team's best efforts
and the great header of mr pio lim! who scored the equalising goal in the
finals. mvp was martin quimson, the keeper =)

the next was the under-17 coke go-for-goal. we swept away through the tournament
(during which i scored a magnificent diving header against southridge..which put us
about 4 or 5 goals up in the lead ;)) anyway, we won all the way to the finals, where things
became awry (look it up). we lost to zobel..2-0.. and they got to represent ncr in the all-luzon
up to the national finals in bacolod. well, 3 of us ateneans were selected to play for them, and
guess what, in the all-luzon finals we bagged 3 out of the 5 individual awards! -> best
goalkeeper (martin quimson), best defender (thats me!) and best striker (gino tongson)!
the mvp was from them (daky dakanay), but even so, ateneans topped the lasalle team!
hehe. in bacolod however, we did no better than 4th..and only 1 goal was made. chamba
pa..hehe. oh wel.
back in manila, we had the rifa tournament.. and things got tough for us. because of
discipline problems (some people didn't show up for practice or the game..),
the team was cut down to 10 or 11. but, we managed. we won to the finals, where we got
the chance to get back at la salle. in that game, we were one man down! damn..
stupid unreliable people!.. hehe, oh wel.. we held them scoreless in the 1st half, and then
in the opening whistle of the 2nd half, we caught them flatfooted and scored!! an all-the-way-
penetration by gino tongson! wahahah! the next goal came shortly afterwards: a brilliant
volley by jomar manalo! wuhhoooo! we beat them 2-0 with handicap!
well, we went on to win against xavier in the finals (3-2), and my year was completed. =)
